Types of Food

Poha (Flattened rice)

Made from: Parboiled rice that’s flattened into light flakes.
Common uses: Breakfast dish (poha with onions, peanuts, curry leaves, etc.)

Main ingredients / composition:

  1.  Carbohydrates: ~75%
  2.  Protein: ~6–8%
  3.  Fat: ~1–2%
  4.  Fiber: ~1%
  5.  Iron: moderate (especially in fortified poha)
  6. Calories: ~350 kcal
  7. Carbs: ~75 g

  9. Fat: ~1 g

Sabudana (Tapioca pearls)

Made from: Extracted starch of cassava (tapioca root).
Common uses: Khichdi, vada, kheer, papad, etc.

Main ingredients / composition:

  1. Carbohydrates: ~85–90% (mostly starch)
  2. Protein: 0.2–1% (very low)
  3. Fat: almost none
  4. Fiber: very little
  5. Minerals: small amounts of calcium, iron, and potassium

Jeera (Cumin seeds)

Comes from: Seeds of the Cuminum cyminum plant.
Common uses: Added to tadka, curries, chaas, etc.

Mustard Seeds

Made from:
Seeds of mustard plant (Brassica species).

Common uses:
